Announcements

Conni Eckstein encouraged everyone to mark their calendars to help with the DIstrict Service Project on April 24. More details to come but it will be held in a city park and include all Norman Rotary Clubs. One or more nonprofits will be selected and a call will go out to drop off donated items from the organizations' wish lists. Volunteers also will clean up the park. A Sooner Rotary member is needed to serve as the liaison to the multi-club project. Contact Conni or Jonna.

April Heiple noted that any food that we'd feed our own families is needed for the Food and Shelter food pantry. Donations can be dropped off any day of the week at the center.

Jack Beller noted that the board slate for the next Rotary year has been approved. He will send the committee assignments to all members to review and to notify him if they want to make any changes to their assignment.

Our Program

Sara King, Communications Health Education and Planning Lead for Cleveland County Health Dept and the county health departments in our region (Grady, McClain, Seminole, Hughes and Pottawatomie) provided helpful info about the COVID-19 vaccination program.  (Image from Daniel Schludi-Unsplash)

Key Takeaways:
*We're currently in Phase 2 of the vaccination program--delivering vaccines to the first three groups listed under that phase.
*Cleveland County has vaccinated about 20,000 to date, most with their primary or first dose of either the Moderna or Pfeizer vaccines.
*Sooner Mall is the location for Cleveland County. It serves about 1,100 doses a day on Monday-Wed. Tuesday and Thursdays the clinics are in Pottawatomie and McClain Counties and Friday is Seminole and Grady Counties each site serving about 700 doses on days they operate.
*Cleveland County is working on a duplicated schedule--meaning when someone gets a first vaccine in the county they are scheduled for their second dose within the time period recommended so they don't have to follow up through the registration portal.
*Residents can get a vaccine in any county, but in many there is no duplicated schedule so those folks will have to check email from the state portal to schedule their own second dose somewhere in the state.
*First and second doses need to be from the same vaccine manufacturer--Moderna or Pfeizer right now.
*The biggest challenges for distributing vaccines is the lack of sufficient inventory and a state portal that is being enhanced on the fly.
*Partners and other sites in Norman include IMMY and the Classen Urgent Clinic.
*Initial guidance was for the second doses to be given three weeks after the first dose for Pfeizer and four weeks after the first dose for Moderna. It has been updated by the CDC so that second doses can now be given up to six weeks after first doses.
*Rotary can help by sharing information, helping folks who don't use technology to get scheduled either online or via the Classen Urgent Clinic.
*Rotary can also help by providing snacks to staff and volunteers during the clinics. At Sooner Mall that's about 47 people.

Thanks to Sara for keeping us up to date and for all the county health team and volunteers are doing to get ahead of the spread of COVID-19!
