Happy Dollars

Grand babies, vacations, colleges returning for on campus classes--however long it might last, Norman bond election today, upcoming trips, dog-walking accidents (Jonna) no broken jaw. Keith Busking also noted that member Scott Mullins looks like US Postmaster General DeJoy. You be the judge!

Announcements

Cliff reminded everyone of the upcoming Breakfast Buddies outside at Neighborhood Jam in downtown Norman at 7 a.m. this Thursday, August 27.

The Epilepsy Foundation

Scott Mullins introduced our speaker, Gregg Fort, the regional director of chapter operations at the Epilepsy Foundation. Gregg is in the second chapter of his career, after having been in higher education sports management.

Gregg noted that epilepsy is misunderstood and research of it grossly underfunded. More than 43,000 Oklahomans have the disorder which is defined on the Epilepsy.com website as follows:
> Epilepsy is a condition of the brain causing seizures.
> A seizure is a disruption of the electrical communication between neurons.
> Someone is said to have epilepsy if they experience two or more unprovoked seizures separated by at least 24 hours or after one seizure with a high risk for more.

Gregg reported that the Epilepsy Foundation is delivering virtual Seizure Safe First Aid training to Oklahomans and across the country. The Foundation has trained almost 100,000 in the first few weeks of training this summer--including all the nurses in OKC public schools.

There is a proposed law in the Oklahoma Legislature to make Oklahoma schools Seizure Safe Schools--which means at least one school employee is trained to deal with seizures and deliver seizure medication.

Gregg noted that there is a stigma associated with epilepsy--often because of state laws that suspend a driver's license for months if someone is diagnosed. He also wanted everyone to know how the COVID-19 pandemic is adversely affecting most nonprofits and small, liberal arts colleges who rely on much of their revenue from on campus student housing.

Thank you Gregg!
